What the hell are you talking about Twiddle?

Well recently I had some constructive criticism, hey he was a nice bloke and was being helpful, saying some of my emails were, well the word ‘pathetic’ was mentioned, but he wasn’t being as harsh (I don’t think) as that word made it seem.I really do think he was passing on constructive assistance.

My reply is below, and whilst I acknowledge I don’t know where to draw the line, some of the time, when I air the mistakes that happen back of house in my business, or with technology, etc, I do it completely on purpose. Here was my reply -

Hey XXXX, cheers for the response and I do appreciate the feedback.

I really hope I can make a point for a sec. While many times these stories that seem like I’m running a junk shop here, many times they are an exaggeration of the truth, or simply relaying what happened. And here’s a few points why.

- A research team split tested a bunch of headlines, and headlines with slight errors in grammar, spelling, etc win over identical headlines that are grammatically correct. Every time. Probably because our attention gets drawn to them. I’m not interested in the opinion of the people reading them as to the intelligence of the writer, I’m simply talking in $$’s. Incorrect grammar, spelling wins in advertising over correct.

- Another example was research done by Robert Cialidini and documented in his book Influence – The Psychology of persuasion. They sent out resumes, identical to 1000 jobs (can’t remember the number, but it was enough to get statistically compelling data), and the resumes were IDENTICAL, only one was completely glowing, and the other had one criticism, that he ‘doesn’t always get on with people’ or something, something quite negative, but in all other ways identical. No guesses which one got heaps more job interview call backs than the other.

So yeah, I may go over the top and some of my emails sound unprofessional, but for the most part, I suggest that’s part of the reason I have come from literally no where and am nipping at the heels of the Lee Woodward’s, Michael Sheargold’s etc, and so many other trainers would dearly like to be, who have been trying years longer than me.

So again, what may seem ‘pathetic’ is in some ways, completely by design, I mean thing about it, which real estate trainer, now ignore the content, but which real estate trainer got more of your attention in the last 72 hrs?

Not saying my style is for everyone, but maybe consider this email, and see how slight imperfections, what I call ‘Damning Admissions’ might be useful in your business.

(man I’ve gone on with this, I’ll remove all reference to you, but I’m going to use this lesson in a blog post soon, so thanks mate, if u wanna chat ever mate, I owe u one, shoot me an email with when we can talk if ever u need anything)

Now the fact is, in our own marketing, our job is to cut through the clutter and get noticed, PERIOD. I will not be relenquished to the depths of mediocrity by trying to be Mr Professional, because a) it ain’t me, and b) there’s enough of them out there so I’m going to quote Mal Emery, (quoting Earl Nightingle) when I say….

I think it was Earl Nightingale that said, “If you can’t find a valid model for success in your category, then look at what everyone else is doing and do the opposite.” So true.

Had to share this one.

Subway Sandwiches – who’d have thought a 16 year old girl would be using very Advanced Hypnotic Selling?

Ok, I suspect she didn’t know it, but boy, this is good, good good, and downright naughty.

Ok, what would Subway, or any purveyor of healthy alternative to fast food want us to think about their product? I guess that it’s FRESH would be high on the list yeah?

Well I partake in the odd sub from Subway, and they ask, as part of their procedure, ‘toasted or fresh?’ A seemingly innocuous question yes? Oh but the naughtiness there.

They don’t sya ‘toasted or not toasted?’ or ‘toasted?’…but

‘Toasted or Fresh?’

So what that means is, HALF OF THE TIME, or whenever someone wants an untoasted sandwich. They HAVE to say ‘FRESH’ . They simply can’t say another response to that sentence without it sounding ridiculous. You can’t say yes or no, because that wouldn’t be responding to the question.

So about half, if not more, of their customers are being psychologically driven, (without any inkling of it) into ‘ratifying’ to themselves that Subway make fresh food.

And the fact that WE are saying it, means there is no way that, in our own heads, that we are wrong. No longer is the advertising message coming from outside of us through a TV, paper or billboard.

By cleverly manipulating a simple sales process, the advertising message that Subway want us to believe, is coming from our own mouths and brains.

(hey I eat their stuff so I’m not saying the product is anything but what they say it is, but that isn’t my point. There’s lots of places that make a fresh sandwich though)

They are geniuses. Whoever came up with that simple plan deserves an honourary degree in Advanced Hypnotic Selling. Brilliant, naughty, completely undetectable, and highly influencing.

Would seriously love to hear what the selling community and marketing experts have to say about this. Anyone know if this is deliberate or just the luckiest, cleverest accidental language pattern in fast food history.

We conducted an interview for his people for a half hour chat on Hypnotic Selling, NLP and communication in general.

Was a blast and it’s no wonder this guy is so successful, as he really oozes ‘likeability.’

Look forward to picking his brains for you guys as he’s promised to do an interview for us in the near future. For now, enjoy this one…

Well, didn’t my nice little email for my friend, Rae Brent, cause a stir. (copy of the full email is at the end of this article)

I sent out an email plugging her book, just released this weekend on Amazon. Link is here by the way…Buy The Money Mirror here(if you like, no pressure….hehe)

I had a very polarising response in the first 10 minutes. Everything from ‘Sure, will buy one in the next day or so.’ (congrats Hayley, link to your site as thanks www.essentialkey.com.au – Home Staging for properties)….

through to a few less than encouraging emails. (and if that’s what got you to unsubscribe, then I guess it was going to be sooner rather than later, because my message is only going to get more controversial next year. Strap yourself in guys, big things planned).

So here’s the thing. Each to their own people. Yeah I may not exactly subscribe to using ‘The Secret’ and what some of the Law of attraction crowd teach like how to use the Universe like some sort of cosmic ebay, where your positive thoughts are the equivalent of paypal.

That being said, I do absolutely know that there is part of you that is controlling many of your decisions on a day to day basis that is NOT your conscious intellect.

Most of the decisions you make to buy a product, go out with a potential partner, befriend someone, attend a course, start a career, don’t start a career, etc, are made based on your unconscious mind’s programs telling you what to do, but your oh so clever conscious mind thinks it’s making the decisions. (check out the first page of Brian Klemmer’s book – dare I put a link up for fear of people thinking I’m flogging them something…
If How-To’s Were Enough We Would All be Skinny, Rich and Happy)

So I make no apologies for daring to shoot out a plug for my friend’s book. She’s an absolute pleasure to deal with on a business level. She creates raving fans wherever she goes, and those fans include the biggest skeptics like my good self, Mal Emery, and many others high flying Entrepeneurs. And also, let’s see anyone else get a co-author credit with Bob Proctor.

Sorry this email must have caught me on a bad day, and I’m like a tigress defending her cubs, haha, deep breath, back to nice guy Glenn now…..

PS – Here’s the controversial email that started it all….

Hey there,

Listen, I don’t know how into the ‘woo woo’ stuff you are, but a friend of mine (who is,) has just written and released a book that can only be described as ‘The Secret on Steroids.’ Now just because I happen to use different words than ‘The Secret’ crowd, doesn’t mean I don’t think the techniques used by the ‘woo woo’ mob don’t have power to affect our lives.

Quite the contrary, in fact, I really do teach the same stuff, only instead of me giving credit to ‘the universe’ or other such label, I suggest it is our unconscious mind we are reprogramming, which in turn, creates the change in our lives.

This campaign is certainly seeing the parties pulling out all the stops. Recent advertising by the LNP has been identified as containing subliminal messages that are designed to have the public voting for them without them even knowing why.

The recent article on my Hypnotic Selling on A Current Affair polarised public opinion when it was revealed some Real Estate agents trained by me, using these techniques. I said recently in a Press Release, ‘I wonder how the public would feel about their politicians using them?’

Some fo the techniques I have seen Politicians using, that appear to be attempting to coerce the unconscious minds of the public I will reveal here -
(Of course, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is no stranger to these teaching. Mr Twiddle strongly suspects the victory of the ‘Kevin 07’ campaign contained several techniques of what is known as ‘anchoring’ negative emotions to the Howard Government with specific techniques that seemed to be done, very much deliberately, and with full intent.)

In my opinion, it seems to me, that the current opposition, led by Tony Abbot, are using a technique called ‘phonetic ambiguity’ and you can see in plain sight that they are using subliminal communication to influence you to vote their way, and is it little wonder that only a month ago, you’d have thought Tony Abbot had no chance of winning this election, and now, he looks like he just might.’

Some techniques that are being used by our leaders in this (and the last) election -

- Phoetic Ambiguity – the catch phrase ‘Real Action’ is a phonetic ambiguity of the word ‘re-election’ , ‘With the Coalition (or whatever team member we are plugging’ you get real action. It’s brilliant, yet totally obvious at least to me. The unconscious must process the sentence and interpret both meanings, whereas the conscious mind is oblivious to the multiple levels of linguistic trickery going on here.

If I said the word ‘cheap’ in whatever context, your unconscious has to decide and try on all the meanings of the word cheap, like does he mean inexpensive or the sound a bird makes, before your conscious mind gets the meaning served up to it. Like if I said to you after an advertisement – ‘Bye now’, your unconscious has to decide, at an unconscious level, if I meant a farewell, or a command to ‘Buy Now !!’ and the command is felt by the unconscious mind, even if you meant it as a farewell.

- Anchoring :- Using negative emotions and using visual triggers and linking them to the then Howard Government and was used brilliantly by Kevin Rudd in the ‘Kevin 07’ campaign.

Remember he used to hold up the visual symbol of an open hand, every time he referred to the ‘five times’ the then Howard Government allowed interest rates to be raised etc. This gave him a very powerful visual symbol he could use whenever talking about his opposition, as we now had negative emotions anchored to his visual symbol.

And these are just the obvious ones I’ve seen in a passing glance. I wonder with further study can we find more?

If this subject is of interest, email me as I don’t have a specific training course in a product form, but I do have the recordings of a 2 day event I did with master hypnotist David KEnnedy and myself called ‘Advanced Hypnotic Selling’ but email me if this is of any interest. glenn@glenntwiddle.com.au

I haven’t had a laugh like this in years. Then I got mad and now I don’t know whether to ignore and let the ignorance of this news article to itself or to investigate and comment to the authors. Might do a little of both, haha.

The article I refer to is here.

http://www.itnews.it/news/2008/0630080201783/no-place-for-hypnotherapy-and-acupuncture-in-an-evidence-based-nhs-stop-smoking-service.html

And I understand that by linking to this article I only increase its prominence but I feel the need to discuss.

I have been a student of the mind, NLP, hypnosis for many years now, and now I’m hypnotherapist and work for (I’m honoured and humbled to say) the most successful hypnotherapy and training organisation in Brisbane for the last ….well for many many years, the Brisbane Hypnosis Centre www.brisbanehypnosis.com.au

In my sessions I make this comment or something like it to EVERYONE who comes for smoking cessation, that if for whatever reason they slip up, or heaven forbid, have a cigarette, don’t go through life thinking they are a failure or hypnosis is a failure, or it doesn’t work. But I make the offer to come back, and let’s help them tighten up what they learned at a conscious and an unconscious level and see what happened, what success they did have and build on that success. And despite this offer made to several hundred people, only a handful have taken me up on that offer. That, coupled with the many referrals I have had from people who have stopped smoking FOR GOOD, tells me that this articles’ claim that any long term success over, 20% did it say, is to ‘beware of.’

‘Smokers should beware of any treatment that claims to have a higher than 50 per cent short-term (i.e. four weeks after quitting) or 20 per cent long-term (i.e. after six months) success rate.’

Here’s my guess. Dr Andy McEwen has just under a 20% long term success rate using whatever method he uses (and just under a 50% short term success rate) so anything that claims to be better than that is to be WARNED about.

I claim to have a 100% success rate. I am a very good hypnotist, so I know what to say, how to say it, using the right tonality and the right skills to induce and deepen an altered state and help influence the unconscious mind. I make it very clear that it isn’t ME, or this state called HYPNOSIS that is doing the smoking cessation though. I give the credit to the PERSON when they give up smoking. It is THEM that deserves the credit and in the same way, if they do NOT give up smoking, they deserve the credit for that as well.

I once saw a client who had previously seen Martin St James and David Kennedy for smoking cessation. Between these two legends of the hypnosis community they have about 400,000% more experice in hypnosis than I have (that figure is approximately accurate according to my research), and the fact that this client has now stopped smoking after seeing me this latest time is a point worthy of discussion.

I could get all egotistical and think I’m the all powerful hypnotist with these great skills because I could do what two of the absolute best of the best could not do. But anyone with half an understanding of hypnosis (and I’m not talking about an authoritarian ‘Look into my eyes and obey me’ type of hypnosis) will know that my thinking and arrogance would be unfounded. Martin I’m sure did a great job. I’ve not met Martin St James but have read his very good book a few times and he claims to have hypnotised over a million people in his career, so no doubt this man knows a thing or two about how to use hypnosis. And I am absolutely sure that David Kennedy, who can hypnotise the unhypnotisable (ie ME), did an absolutely superlative job. I don’t deserve the credit for this guy stopping and they don’t deserve the blame for him not stopping in the past. Only now was he ready to stop, and hypnosis was the thing that helped him instruct his unconscious that he was ready to stop, for his reasons, and now he’s ready to change a behaviour and a series of unconscious responses, that previously, for whatever reason, he was unwilling to do. It could have been anything. It even could have been him saying to himself, ‘..well I’m with Martin St James or David Kennedy and they’re such great hypnotists, then I won’t have to do any work, the HYPNOSIS will quit for me. Well no wonder he kept smoking. Hypnosis doesn’t do it, a person does.

in fact when our friend types this statement “There is no good research evidence to show that hypnotherapy or acupuncture increase a person’s chance of stopping smoking. You may hear people who are convinced that these, or other complementary therapies, helped them stop smoking – but there is no way of knowing whether they would have stopped anyway….” I wonder if he wasn’t closer to the truth than this Doctor realises. They were committed to stopping, and hypnosis assisted in making this commitment become a reality for them in their lives.

I’ll sum up by saying that the Brisbane Hypnosis Centre, www.brisbanehypnosis.com.au, that I am honoured to work at, has seen over 10,000 smokers for more than a decade and more than 70% of the clients there come by way of referral. Make up your own mind as to whether or not a business could be THAT successful if it was founded on the premise that all of those people ‘would have given up anyway.’

I apologise for the inflammatory tone of this article, but I guess when I see people reading this article and I picture them not coming to a skillful hypnotist because of misconceptions like this article, it gets my back up.

Anyway, I’ll get off my soapbox now. I’m quite happy with my level of success, and so are my teachers, employers, students and most importantly, my clients are SO often, getting the outcomes they are after, and if that’s the case, I don’t care who gets the credit, in fact I’d prefer it’s not me, too much pressure on me. haha.

Wonder if this will get the attention of Dr Andy McEwen Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Research Centre Epidemiology & Public Health University College London? If so, I hope he comments and some healthy debate ensues. Kieren and Co, you up for it?

Comments appreciated. (and late at night so apologies for any spelling or grammatical errors)

Had a query from a student about hypnosis, so I thought I’d send out an excerpt from my website as a bit of info for anyone curious about hypnosis and how it works, and what it can assist people with…. read on….

What is Hypnosis

In days gone by, it was thought that the power if hypnosis lay in the hands of the hypnotist. Today, this theory is only perpetuated by some stage hypnotists. (and only some, read Martin St James’ book, it’s a cracker!!)
Hypnosis is a natural state, one that you are very familiar with, although you may not call it by that name. Have you ever driven a familar part of road and arrived safely home, and wondered to yourself, ‘Where on earth did the last 7 km’s go?’ Your subconscious mind was ensuring your safety whilst your conscious mind was engrossed ‘elsewhere.’ During the journey, some other things happened, like your brain waves slowed to a slightly altered ‘Alpha’ level where they resonate at a slightly lesser frequency of 8-12Hz a second.
You were ‘day dreaming.’ In the state of hypnosis, your body becomes very relaxed, yet your mind is very focused even more so than when you are in a normal waking state, quite often. While this is happening, your subconscious mind is more open to beneficial ideas or thoughts which it may process, leading the way to positive and lasting change.
For that reason many people when asked if they have been hypnotised respond with, ‘I don’t know.’ They may have been to a hypnotist in the past, but because the state feels so natural to them, they are unsure if they were hypnotised. It’s a familiar feeling!! You’re not asleep, unconscious, unaware, out of control, in fact it’s often just the opposite.
When you come and see a hypnotherapist, you will be aware of what the hypnotist is saying, and should you want to, or need to, you could leave hypnosis at any time. You know that feeling when you’re half awake, half asleep in the morning, and you know you could spring out of bed at any time, you just couldn’t be bothered. Same thing – a very familiar state. but up until now, you were unaware how beneficial that state can be for making changes at a deep level; permanent change, for your benefit.
Some people ask, ‘Can I be hypnotised?’ and that’s a fair and common question. It’s been shown that anyone who wants to be hypnotised, can be!! You will leave a session here with an experience that shows you that you can and are feeling and experiencing hypnosis.
Hypnosis has been known to help people with -

Stopping smoking
Weight Control
Stress relief
Panic attacks
Anxiety
Pain management (see your doctor first as we can’t treat ‘undiagnosed’ pain)
Insomnia
Phobias
Self-Esteem
Confidence
Motivation
Memory enhancement
Freedom from the past
Sexual dysfunction
Migraine headaches (see your doctor first as we can’t treat ‘undiagnosed’ pain)
Sports performance
Study and exam preparation
Surgery preparation
and many more.

Frequently asked Hypnosis questions

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Yes, with very few exceptions. Very young children may have difficulty, and also people with severe brain damage. People may not be hypnotized against their will. Other than that, we find the `trick’ to hypnotising someone is spending time with them to find the best approach to working with them. We won’t do the same thing with everyone.
Isn’t it just a matter of having a good imagination?
The ability to imagine is unrelated to the ability to experience hypnosis. Change resulting from hypnotherapy requires only that your intent and willingness are in place. I am strong-minded, with a formidable will. Can I be hypnotised? Only if you want to be, but not because of your relative “strength” of mind. We understand that there are parts of us that want to change, and parts of us that are happy with the way things are. While we accept that this is often the situation, we assume that if you’ve booked a session, then you want our help. It would be a waste of your time and money if you were to resist that help. We’ll always tell you if we don’t think hypnosis is right for you.

Do people who are hypnotised lose control?

In hypnosis, you’re perfectly capable of saying no or terminating the hypnosis session. Just as you’d refuse to jump off a bridge simply because someone told you to, so too would you reject any suggestion made to you in hypnosis that you did not agree with.

Will I forget what happened in my session?

Occasionally, spontaneous hypnotic amnesia does occur after a session, however this is uncommon, and most people will remember what is said to them during a session.

Will I be made to talk about things that I’d prefer not to?

Absolutely not. A hypnotist cannot make you say or do anything that you don’t want to say or do.

I have trouble relaxing. Does this mean I can’t be hypnotised?

Hypnosis does not require that you are relaxed, although it is more pleasant when you are, and relaxation may be a side-effect. But the hypnotic trance can be achieved when you are standing, running, angry, hurt, sad, in shock….you get the picture.

How do I choose a hypnotherapist?

It is important that you feel comfortable with the therapist that you choose. The person you call should be happy to give you information over the phone before you make an appointment. Ask questions! A good hypnotherapist will encourage their clients to be educated about the process. If you don’t know anyone who has been to see your chosen therapist before, it may be worth asking to have a previous client call you so you can discuss their experience. It’s always advisable to choose a hypnotist who is a member of a recognised Association, as these have Codes of Conduct that must be adhered to, and members will generally have had to demonstrate their ability to practice with skill.

So call for an informal chat and you just may imagine, years from now, looking back on this call..now.. as the most important one you ever made.
